Bororo notes

General observations

  • The orthography used here follows the practical orthography used by Crowell (1979), in which j = // and x = //. Examples taken from Rodrigues (1993) have been adapted to it.
  • The same set of person prefixes are used across different word classes: verbs (subject), nouns (possessor with inalienables) and prepositions (object).
  • Allomorphy in the 3sg extends across all these classes (Crowell 1979: 209f). Ø appears to be the default, except for agentive verbs, which always take u-.
  • The voicing alternation that occurs in the thematic consonant ('prefix 2') corr lates with the presence or absence of a consonant in the preceding prefix (a-k-ogwa 'your lips (singular)' vs ta-g-ogwa (plural)). The voicing alternation in the stem that occurs between prefixed and unprefixed forms (i-mago 'I speak' vs mako 's/he speaks') is described by Crowell (1979: 15) as subject to the same conditions, but clearly it is not.

Nominals

  • Only animate nouns distinguish number; a couple items have suppletive stems (Crowell 1979: 224-26).
  • An exception to this is the word epa 'appropriate to', used to form compound derivatives. This takes a plural ending for inanimates too, but it is distinct from the animate form: jorobokuru epa ~ jorubokuru epa-ge 'doctors/nurses' (medicine appropriate) vs bolo epa-e 'cake ingredients' (Crowell 1979: 226).
