Ibibio notes

Phonology/symbols

  • 1. Tone symbols: L = low, H = high, F = falling.
  • 2. The symbols N and V in the prefixes represent underspecified nasal and vocalic segments that assimilate to what follows.
  • 3. Inflectional class membership is predictable on the basis of syllable structure and tone. The terms 'light' and 'heavy' used here are not Kaufman's, but generalize over the following categories:
    • light: CVV, CVCV, CV₁V₂
    • heavy: containing either CC or V₁V₁

Paradigm

The forms shown here represent those subject-marked forms which are inflected solely by means of subject prefixes and tone, plus a representative (i) paradigm with the negative suffix, and (ii) sequential verb, i.e. non-initial verb in a serial verb construction; in these cases there are fewer distinct subject prefixes. Additional verbal forms are either based on these plus an element prefixed to the stem, or are fused serial verb constructions involving a small set of TAM-marking preverbs plus sequential verb forms.
